Admissions FAQs
Q: What is Marin Horizon School looking for in a student?
A:We seek students who are bright and eager to learn, who have the ability to succeed in an intellectually challenging program, and who can function independently in a classroom. We are also looking for students whose families appreciate the school's core values and who understand the unique approach of our academic program. Marin Horizon seeks to enroll a student population that is reflective of diversity across a broad spectrum including ethnic, cultural, religious and economic differences.
Q: What is the application procedure?
A: See Process and Timeline for how to apply, important dates, and more.
Q: How many openings do you have?
A: Our goal is to enroll 24 students at each grade level. Our toddler program is highly competitive and siblings of currently enrolled students who show the capacity to thrive in our program, and whose families have demonstrated support of the school, receive special consideration. Space at all other grade levels -- from 3 years to grade 8 -- depends on attrition.
Q: Who makes the admissions decisions?
A: The Director of Admissions with consultations from the faculty and Head of School makes the admission decisions. Acceptances are based on many considerations, and are guided by the MHS mission.
Q: Do you accept transfer students?
A: Yes. The number of transfer students we accept is dependent on attrition each year.
Q: Are tours or open houses required for families applying to MHS?
A: Yes. Tours allow a parent to see how our Montessori-inspired educational philosophy manifests in the classrooms. Open houses give parents an opportunity to hear from the Head of School, Associate Head of School, faculty, students and parents about the academic experience at MHS. See Important Dates in this section for open house and tour dates.
Q: Do you have one-on-one interviews?
A: Yes. In addition to teachers observing (all ages) and interviewing (upper elementary and middle school) students, the Director of Admissions interviews all applicant families. These observations and interviews provide valuable insight into a child's potential academic and social match with the MHS program.
Q: What role does diversity play at MHS?
A: Respect for diversity is a core value of Marin Horizon. For complete information see Diversity in the About section.
