Traffic Reduction Pledge
Marin Horizon School Mandatory Traffic Regulations
As a condition of our Use Permit to build a new building on our campus, we are required to keep traffic in the neighborhood at a minimum. Mandatory traffic rules introduced in 2003 and now revised, must be followed to meet the stiff new requirements of our contract Marin County. Our target traffic goal for 2007-2008 is to reduce the flow of traffic to below 100 cars between 8:00 am and 9:00 am (our peak traffic time) and to further reduce vehicle trips at pick-up times.
Most MHS families participate in carpooling, walking from Whole Foods, or bicycling to school to help reduce traffic through the neighborhood. Since 2003 we have reduced MHS school traffic by more than 20%. We added a van shuttle service for students grades 1-8 that will run twice from the Marin Theater Company commuter parking lot between 7:50 am and 8:15 am.
Beyond our own needs, we recognize that traffic is a community-wide issue. Our goal is to lead the way and become an even stronger model for doing our part to address the issue. At MHS we are also committed to this goal because it's environmentally sound, it's good citizenship, and if you elect to walk or bike, it can contribute to life-long healthy habits and fitness. We trust our community will continue to rally -- as it has in the past for other issues -- to make drop-off, pick-up, and visiting school as fluid and friendly as possible.
There are people to call with your questions and issues, and we will work with every family to make traffic reduction an enhancement of your MHS experience. Warnings and discussion will be the primary focus of enforcement. The Head of School will call chronic violators or families that do not comply.
Reduction of Vehicles
We expect all MHS families except toddlers to participate in the Mandatory Traffic Reduction Plan. We strongly encourage all middle school students to get a healthy start to the day by walking in from Whole Foods and arranging for a family pick-up down there in the afternoon whenever possible. We encourage families with younger children to share driving with others as much as possible; you may leave car seats at school to facilitate safe transportation.
Monitoring and Enforcement
We will work together to make our traffic reduction a success. Parents are asked to read the Traffic Reduction Plan.
Failure to comply with the MHS Traffic Regulations will result in action by MHS, beginning with warnings, then fines, or more severe measures. Please remember this program has been developed for the good of the school, the good of the neighborhood, and the good of our environment.
