Marin Horizon School has long been successful in including global education and multicultural perspectives in its core values, community and curriculum. Our long-standing focus in this area finds its roots in the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, who believed that cross-cultural understanding is essential to world peace.

We share Dr. Montessori's beliefs, and find that in today's world the need for understanding across cultures has only increased in importance. Thus, you will find that across the grades, our core curriculum - social studies, language arts, math, science and the arts - offers multicultural units of study. Our students learn about the Miwok Indians, Australia, Africa, ancient civilizations (Mayan and Egyptian), California, Japan, Europe in the Middle Ages and U.S. History. Even preschool students study a culture each year, rotating between Europe, Africa and Asia.

Study is based around the needs of the people (food, shelter, clothing, transportation, etc). In the early grades, students also learn about the geography, flora and fauna, music, art, and literature. Beginning in the fourth/fifth grade classroom, cultural studies expand to include history and delve deeper into the major factors that have influenced the history and culture of various peoples.
