Service Learning « Whole Child Development
Community service is integral to the MHS program. We begin with a recognition and understanding of community -- in the classroom, school, broader community and the world. We teach children what it means to give service and provide meaningful experiences that allow them to see a direct connection between their actions and their impact on the community.
Every year, each class adopts an on-going service project and participates in several school-wide projects, such as clothing and blanket drives for flood victims in Nicaragua, hurricane victims in New Orleans and homeless in Afghanistan. Our Student Council also organizes significant fundraising efforts such as adoption of children through Save the Children.
Our service learning program is widely recognized and its benefits are far-reaching. A few examples of those in the community whom we have helped include:
- Adopt-A-Family
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marin & Napa
- Hands and Hearts Across the Americas
- Heifer International
- Homestead Valley (neighborhood clean-up)
- Homeward Bound of Marin
- The Learning Center in Marin City
- Marin County Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (MCSTOPP)
- Marin Food Bank
- Marin Recycling Center
- Muir Woods National Monument
- Safe Routes to School Program

- St. Vincent de Paul
- Southern Marin Fire District
