What Sets Us Apart

We are an independent, coed day school for students in Toddler through Grade 8. And we're located at the foot of majestic Mount Tamalpais in Mill Valley, California.

Founded in 1977, we have always been proud to say that we're a different kind of school. One that fosters a genuine passion for learning, kindness, and positive change. Our curriculum is designed to inspire students to embrace challenges, think critically, and become compassionate advocates. And within our inclusive community, every student is seen, heard, and valued.

How do we make this happen? Our answer is four-fold:

1. Our curriculum is grounded in academic discipline, and buoyed by imagination.

When students leave Marin Horizon, they walk away with a strong academic foundation and the confidence to think critically and use what they’ve learned in real life. We see creativity and academic discipline not as opposites, but as partners in great learning. Here, students are encouraged to think outside the proverbial box while mastering the fundamentals.  Our approach involves students in hands-on, interdisciplinary projects grounded in solid academics. They learn to explore, create, and problem-solve in their own ways, supported by a solid structure. The result is deeper, more meaningful learning that lasts long after the lesson has ended.

2. We push students to venture outside their comfort zones, while surrounding them with unwavering support.

We believe that students do best when they are both challenged and supported. Marin Horizon sets high academic expectations and encourages risk-taking, but does so in a nurturing environment, meeting each child where they are in their learning journey. We encourage our students to try hard things and view setbacks as part of the learning process. As one of our science teachers explains, “We give kids a safe space to fail spectacularly and learn from that.” Many students often hold back in traditional classrooms, afraid of looking bad or getting a poor grade—but at MHS, trial and error is celebrated. When MHS students move on to high school, they’re ready to stretch beyond what feels familiar.

3. Here, belonging expands like the rings of a redwood tree.

It ripples outward—from deep connections in the classroom, to the warm hug of the wider community of our school and families, to the natural environment that inspires wonder and responsibility. Students feel deeply connected: to their teachers who know them well, to their peers who support and celebrate them, and to the environment that inspires wonder and responsibility. Marin Horizon nurtures connection in every direction—within ourselves, with one another, and with the wider world beyond our campus. Our young students are developing the social and emotional skills that help them feel grounded, connected, and at home wherever they choose to go.

4. At our core, we are about helping students develop their confident voices.

We know that raising a capable young person with a confident voice isn't just a matter of luck—it's the result of intentionally creating an environment where their voice can grow and thrive. Learning to express yourself and stand up for your ideas takes time—and a lot of practice. From their earliest years, students start small: reading aloud, sharing a story, or presenting a simple project to their classmates. As they move into the upper grades, students are continuing to practice and refining the ways in which they express their voice. From year to year, the audience grows, the stakes rise (from a small group to a  school assembly to an audience of our entire community), and their confidence deepens. By the time they graduate, they’ve found a voice that’s genuine, kind, and ready to make a difference in the world.
