Primary Experience (Ages 3-5)

A TIME TO DISCOVER.

The belonging that toddlers first felt now becomes something children can act on: the confidence to ask "why," to test an idea, and to discover something new. As language expands and imagination flourishes, children engage in more sophisticated symbolic play as they move from exploration to explanation. They no longer simply observe the world—they begin wondering why it works the way it does.

The Primary Program is intentionally designed as the bridge between the wonder of early childhood and the logical thinking that emerges in the elementary years.

Children still learn through movement, imagination, and hands-on experiences, but they increasingly recognize patterns, make connections, solve problems, and use language and symbols to organize their thinking.

Montessori materials provide strong foundations in literacy, mathematics, science, cultural studies, the arts, and outdoor education which are woven together to reinforce our transdisciplinary approach. A garden project becomes mathematics through measurement, science through observation, literacy through storytelling, and citizenship through learning  to share responsibility, care for living things, and contribute to their community.

This integrated approach asks more of students than isolated lessons. They begin transferring ideas from one experience to another, building habits of flexible thinking that become the foundation for deeper academic rigor in our Lower School

As Primary students graduate to Kindergarten and the Lower School program at Marin Horizon, they carry with them a strong academic foundation and a deep curiosity about and love of learning.
