From Recyclables to Fabulous Fashion: the Annual Green Fashion Show (written by student Rachel M.)

While the Wildcats that roam MHS have many identities, they recently took on the mindset of fashion designers. It was the Green Fashion Show! The Green Fashion Show is a cherished yearly tradition–hosted and planned by the student-led Green Team–where learners of all ages design their very own eco-friendly outfits to proudly display on the runway. The rules were simple: no buying materials (it all had to be reused), the ensemble had to be ready by April 1st, and of course, it must be fabulously fashionable!

The Green Fashion Show has been around for years. This April, students gathered together to create their outfits with friends and peers. While working in teams can be challenging, it teaches students to persevere, listen, learn, and contribute. Thanks to the Green Team, MHS Wildcats enjoyed this fun, artsy learning experience once again. Student Green Team leader, eighth-grader Nora C, shared that this is her favorite MHS tradition and that it inspires everyone to participate and be eco-friendly.
The Green Team is a favorite Marin Horizon club with the main purpose of bringing joy and an eco-friendly mindset to our school community. When speaking with Green Team advisor Carla Wilkins, she shared that both she and the club members were confident this would be the best fashion show yet. With such a dedicated advisor, the fashion show wouldn’t be possible.
Students have created many types of pieces to display this year
6th graders Shae, Eleanor and Lena made fashionable newspaper dresses with frills and flowers all the way to the hot-glued hem of their skirts. Fourth-grader Audrey wore her own cascading paper skirt that effortlessly flowed in the wind as she strutted down the runway.
Two years ago, Anika A., now a student at Convent & Stuart Hall High School, made a flowy frock from high school brochures representing her possible future around the Bay Area. Looking back, Anika said that while it was difficult it taught her how to be patient and diligent when designing with these unconventional materials.
And these are just a few examples—the possibilities are endless!
In addition to being a designer, students could also walk as models on the runway at Marin Horizon School. Just take your pick—from shoes to dresses to pants—these designers created amazing pieces for others to style.
At Marin Horizon, this is just one of the many ways we encourage student passions. While the end goal is a competition, students learned to enjoy both the ups and downs—the disagreements and successes, the rushed details and the final piece. The beauty of this fashion show is that you don’t have to win to experience the glamorous, eco-friendly life of a green designer.
