Getting Ready for Seussical Jr – Both On and Off Stage (written by student Leo S.)

The auditions
The Seussical audition is one of the most important days of the Fall semester for many middle school Wildcats. That very week our students lined up to shoot their shots at the role of their dreams in our middle school production of the Seussical. In our silly production we will include all of the silly Dr. Seuss characters, from the Cat in the Hat to the Sour Kangaroo.

Everyone was finishing up their lunch, knowing that the cast auditions were pending a few minutes away. Then they were all in the auditions room sitting nervously in their chairs. Of course, before all of the auditions, Lauren (the drama teacher) assured everyone not to be nervous but they were feeling excited! All of the actors in our Wildcat community were lying in wait, to pounce on their opportunity for their role in the Seussical!
Now that roles have been cast, rehearsals start leading all the way up to our production in February.

The student experience
Our Wildcat dancer Jenna from the dance team projects “I think the Seussical is a really cool and wacky musical. And I just think it's really colorful. I really like the people I dance with because my dance team is pretty cool and I feel like the cast is really cool in general.”
Our drama teacher guides us every step of the way
Our much-loved performing arts teacher Lauren Brody-Clarke exclaimed “We have to memorize, we have to perform, we have to dance, we have to entertain people, we have to tell a story. And we have to do that with integrity and fabulousness.” and with that quote, I think she said it all. Lauren surely does not like to waste time when it comes to helping kids find their creative path and passion.

Behind the scenes of the Seussical
Surprisingly at Marin Horizon being on stage isn't the only way to shine. There's also tech class taught by teacher John Diaz, where the behind the scenes preparation takes place. While the actors play out their roles in the spotlight, the tech class creates costumes, sets, props and mans the sound effects and lighting.

Additionally, from behind the scenes, our favorite artist eighth grader Rachel says, “For students that don't have the kind of sparkle that actors have for being on stage it's a way to perform in a different special way.”
While all the art classes at Marin Horizon School offer great opportunities for our Wildcats, Tech and Theater are the right place for students with creative ambitions to pursue their dreams. Come to watch the Wildcats perform early in February!
