The Arc of Achievement: Celebrating the Class of 2026 and the Class of 2022

 

95% of our Class of 2026 applicants were accepted at their first or second choice high school

At Marin Horizon, we believe that every part of a child’s educational journey is an opportunity for learning and personal growth. This value informs our approach to supporting students as they prepare to leave MHS to attend high school. 

Beginning at the end of 7th grade and continuing throughout 8th grade, students and their families meet and communicate regularly with Jesse Pearson, our high school placement coordinator, 8th grade advisor, and 7th/8th grade language arts teacher. Jesse emphasizes the many valuable lessons that can be learned throughout the high school transition process. Students are encouraged to evaluate their own priorities and interests as they research and explore private and public high schools throughout the North Bay, San Francisco, and beyond.

They receive guidance on how to write personal statements and present themselves as applicants. We practice interview skills, send follow up emails, and track each touchpoint so that students and their families can make informed decisions about what high school is the best choice for them. We emphasize authenticity throughout this process, focusing on the belief that the best outcomes are achieved when kids present their true selves to the world. 

The beauty and wisdom of our process-over-outcome approach is that it assures students gain valuable skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. From college choices to career choices to (even) partner choices, we believe that learning how to explore and evaluate options while always presenting the best and truest versions of oneself consistently leads to the best possible outcomes. And the data bears this out. 

This year, our 8th grade graduates were accepted at:

• Marin Catholic
• Lick Wilmerding High School
• Lowell High School
• International High School
• San Domenico High School
• Stevenson School
• Urban School of San Francisco
• Woodberry Forest

All of our students who applied to independent schools received at least one acceptance and 95% of our applicants were accepted at their first or second choice school. Some students who were accepted at local independent schools chose to go to Tamalpais High School. We fully support families who choose public options. In fact, we view this decision as proof that our process works; students who know themselves and know their options often feel that a local public high school is the best choice for them.

Recently, Jesse was invited to reconnect with a group of Marin Horizon alums who are getting ready to make their next educational transition. The MHS Class of 2022 met at The Junction in Mill Valley to reminisce and catch up, as they prepare to graduate from high school. This group, like our soon-to-be graduates, attended private and public high schools through the Bay Area. Next year, they’re off to an impressive list of colleges and universities.
