Kindergarten

Welcome to Kindergarten

Our Kindergarten program is built upon the foundations of academic rigor, social-emotional development, leadership, and community. Through a combination of large and small-group instruction, as well as hands-on collaborative learning, students expand their critical thinking skills and learn how to self-advocate. Each unit intertwines academic and social-emotional development, preparing students for success in first grade and beyond.

  • Reading and Language Arts

    A language arts program using Lucy Calkin's Reader's and Writer's Workshop allows students to take charge of their own learning at this pivotal stage. Through guided instruction, students learn skills ranging from decoding to reading fluency to storytelling. Students receive the benefit of both whole-group instruction as well as collaborative small group work in order to expand their reading and writing skills.
  • Math

    A manipulatives-based, hands-on Math in Focus program brings problem-solving to life. Students interact and work together in order to develop number sense and work out multi-step problems. The ability to visualize, discuss, and troubleshoot gives students the opportunity to discover mathematical concepts in the world around them while developing the conceptual skills needed to succeed in later elementary grades.
  • Social-Emotional Learning

    A student's social-emotional development is just as important as their academic growth; the skills of self-advocacy, community engagement, compassion and empathy inform students' academic experience and vice versa. Through a philosophy rooted in Responsive Classroom and restorative justice, students learn positive, community-based values that explicitly and implicitly teach the value of self while honoring those around them. Helping students develop an understanding of themselves and the various communities of which they are a part allows them to better navigate their academic experience as well as the greater world around them.
  • Leadership and Community

    In the afternoon, kindergarteners join their peers in the Primary classrooms, creating a multi-age collaborative classroom. This unique experience allows kindergarteners the opportunity to develop leadership skills by mentoring our youngest students through various projects and activities while also reinforcing their own critical thinking and learning. They come to understand what it means to be the oldest in a community of learners and the personal and communal responsibilities that come with it.

Culminating Overnight Trip

In the spring, kindergarteners enjoy an overnight at China Camp State Park. For many students, this is their first night away from their families and a chance to practice independence in a safe and supportive environment. Students gain an understanding of themselves and their peers outside of classroom walls while experiencing the first of our K-8 outdoor education curriculum.

Kindergarten Newspaper

Kindergarteners write and illustrate their own newspaper each spring. They sell copies on Earth Day, with proceeds benefitting the organization of their choice.

I had planned to go the public school route, but as soon as I visited Marin Horizon, I knew it would be our school 'home'.
