Our Mission

Our mission is to challenge students to be self-reliant thinkers and lifelong learners. We inspire academic excellence, nurture students’ natural love of learning, and encourage them to be confident, creative individuals who are responsible to each other, the community, and the world.

Our History

Marin Horizon School was founded as a Montessori-inspired preschool in 1977 by a group of parents and faculty.  Our original campus was in a church basement near downtown Mill Valley. We added grades each year until we graduated our first class in 1987 with just 3 students!

Since our humble beginnings we have grown to more than 300 students and moved our campus twice, first to Corte Madera and then in 1992 to our current site in Homestead Valley, Mill Valley. In January of 2008 we completed a brand new upper school building for our 4th - 8th grades and added a turf field. In August of 2013, we opened our recently renovated Toddler Cottage on Miller Avenue in Mill Valley for our youngest 24 students.

Our program has grown to incorporate other educational approaches that complement our Montessori foundation.  Most classes serve multi-age groups of students that enhance the learning process for both older and younger students.  The curriculum is strongly multi-cultural and interdisciplinary.  Arts, Music and Drama are often integrated into cultural studies and have an important place in the program.

Other programs including Physical Education, Athletics, Environmental & Outdoor Education, Service Learning, and a Student Exchange Program provide further enrichment and enable us to teach to the whole child.  In addition to challenging academics, we also help students learn to manage their time, resolve their social issues successfully, engage with their community and world, and practice leadership skills.
