Everyone gear up! The Marin Horizon Class of 2026 eighth graders are getting ready to leave the nest as high school tour season begins. From Lick-Wilmerding to Marin Academy, our students are exploring campuses across the Bay Area as they start their next big chapter.

Fall is a busy time for us to find and apply to high schools
Starting in August, parents and students log on to Ravenna, the go-to website for families applying to independent schools. The first step on this exciting journey is signing up for open houses and tours. These visits give students a real chance to see what each school is like and think about fit. Would they truly feel happy and supported there? Once students narrow down their top choices, they begin the long and sometimes stressful application process. Essays often ask them to reflect on moments of growth or challenge, and many of those stories begin right here at Marin Horizon. After months of tours, writing, and revising, applications are submitted on January 8, and the long wait for March decision day begins.
Our high school Counseling Program
Throughout the process, Jesse, Marin Horizon’s high school counselor, helps guide students through one of the biggest decisions of their young lives. Every Monday, students meet for a high school application class that focuses not on finding the “best” school, but the best fit. Jesse has supported Marin Horizon eighth graders since 2019, helping with everything from note-taking to essay writing.

Students are at the wheel
While Jesse provides important support, students are the ones in the driver’s seat. Eighth grader Leo Sutherland shared, “Jesse has really supported any decision we make and advertises all the schools fairly, mainly focusing on fit.” At Marin Horizon, we know that every student learns differently. Some want more academic rigor, others are looking for a strong sports program, and a few are even considering boarding schools. Leo adds, “Jesse urges us to find the best fit and keep an open mind, because you never know what you might love or hate.”
Parents also play a big part in the process
Mira Kim, a Marin Horizon parent, shared that “Marin Horizon has weekly meetings and helps the students pace out the work.” That steady guidance helps students stay organized, manage stress, and feel confident through the process.
As our Wildcats finish essays, attend interviews, and prepare to hit submit, one thing stays the same: the support of the Marin Horizon community. Whether students are heading to public, private, or boarding schools, Jesse, teachers, and parents are here to help them every step of the way. It’s sure to be a season to remember, and no matter where they go next, every Marin Horizon student will always have a home at 305 Montford Avenue.
